Fascinated by the news of the notable "find" by Notovitch the Russian traveller, at the convent of Hemis, of a hitherto unknown manuscript of a Tibetan version of the unknown life of Jesus Christ, the then unemployed doctor, Ahmad Shad, decided to apply for a position in Leh, so that the could ascertain the find made by the Russian traveller.

The first two chapters of this book is the story about Ahmad Shad’s journey to Kashmir and then to Lower Tibet – Ladakh. The rest of the chapters consist of introduction on Tibetan history, Tibetan people, their culture, custom and religion, as well as collection of watercolor sketches and photographs taken by Ahmad Shah during his stay in Ladakh.
